Community Forum
Sunday, February 4, 2024 @ 9:00 –10:00 am

Speakers: Jarod Schlacht, Commander #6138, Cleveland Division of Police, First District; Rachel Lovell, Director, Criminology Research Center, CSU

Black Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by gun violence than their white counterparts.  Sixty-three percent of Republicans and Democrats are frustrated by the lack of gun laws. Ohio doesn’t have measurable, effective violence prevention programs that meaningfully reduce crime. Gun violence has a long history. The National Rifle Association—organized in 1871, backed the 1968 Gun Control Act.  By the 1970s, the NRA opposed “gun control”, and became a major player in national politics. By 2000 the NRA was one of the 3 most powerful lobbies in Washington with estimated sales of the AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles reaching $20 million.  By 2016 NRA spending surged to $420 million, with more than $30 million going to support Trump. Some states have programs to effectively reduce gun violence. What’s happening locally?

The MetroHealth System aims to redefine healthcare and go beyond medical treatment. Also home to a renowned Level I Adult Trauma Center, it has more than 600 doctors, 1,700 nurses, and nearly 9,000 employees--making it an economic hub in our communities. In November 2022, MetroHealth opened the new Glick Center--an 11-floor hospital on the main campus as part of a wider neighborhood revitalization effort.

Dr. Airica Steed joined MetroHealth in December 2022 and is the first woman, first Black person, and first nurse to serve as its chief executive in the health system’s almost 200-year history. Throughout her trailblazing career, Dr. Steed has made it her mission to ensure every person has equal access to good health care. In her new role, she aims to position MetroHealth as a national model in health equity, as an innovator in care delivery, and as the community's hospital.

Join the City Club as we hear from Dr. Airica Steed and learn about her goals and unique perspective in her new role at one of Cleveland's top health institutions.

The livestream will be available beginning at Noon at www.cityclub.org. Have questions? Tweet them at @TheCityClub or send a text to 330.541.5794.
